The Inlet Valves in your Jaguar's engine are part of a long list of components in and above the Cylinder Head, ultimately driven by the Crankshaft by a Timing Belt or Chain. They open and close on demand, allowing the fresh air into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke, and should seal closed during the rest of the combustion cycle to maintain compression within the cylinder.  Over the years, and with high mileage, as with any internal engine components, the valves may wear, costing some performance and efficiency. Poor maintenance, not following Jaguar's Service Schedule, or using poor quality engine oil will hasten the wear within the engine. If you are rebuilding your Jaguar's engine and the valves are worn or damaged, you might consider replacing them, along with any other worn components to rejuvenate the engine, and bring back the performance and efficiency.
