The Alternator in your Jaguar is belt-driven from the engine crank pulley, and is there to re-charge your battery after starting your engine, and to maintain the battery Voltage thereafter. If your alternator is failing, you will see the battery warning light on the display, or a warning to inform you the battery isn't charging. The battery light doesn't necessarily mean you need a new battery. Have the starting and charging system inspected by a compenent person with the equipment to test your battery and alternator, and replace any failing parts.
